Departments

Parts

The parts of the Department are the General Assembly and the Director. The General Assembly consists of the Director of the Department, the Faculty members and the student representatives.

Objectives

The General Assembly of the Department coordinates the work of the Department within the context of the decisions of the School Assembly, makes recommendations regarding the curriculum, distributes the funds of the Department to its various teaching and research activities, recommends to the School Assembly the distribution of the teaching work to lecturers, recommends to the School Assembly the textbooks to be distributed for each course in the curriculum..

 

Α. Department of Biblical Literature and Religious Studies

 

The Department covers the subjects of Old Testament, New Testament, Religious Studies and Classical Languages (Biblical Hebrew, Ancient Greek and Latin).

Teaching subject:
Faculty members of the Department teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level related to the disciplines covered by the Department. Specifically, at the undergraduate level, courses are taught in Introduction to the Old and New Testaments, Interpretation of all parts of Biblical Literature, courses on the Ancient Greek religion, Islam and other major religions of mankind, as well as courses in Hebrew, Greek and Latin at various levels. At the graduate level, courses in Interpretive Theology, Religious Studies and Language are also taught.

Research focus:
The research interests of the members of the Department include the study of the Bible, especially the text of the Septuagint translation and the Byzantine text of the New Testament. The sub-discipline of Religious Studies is mainly concerned with Islam and the religions of the Greco-Roman world. Finally, the language of biblical and patristic texts also belongs to the research objects of the Department.

Also, in the context of the research activities of the Department, for 40 years now, the BIBLICUM has been operating. This is a scientific meeting where, in addition to the faculty members of the Department, postgraduate students and doctoral candidates participate. Theological teachers of secondary education can also participate. It is usually convened once a month. Each year it has a single central theme which is covered by six or seven individual contributions by experts from the Department or other Departments of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

 

 

Β. Department of Ecclesiastical History, Christian Literature, Archaeology and Art

 

The Department covers the subjects of Ecclesiastical History, Christian Literature, Christian Archeology and Art .

Teaching subject:
Faculty members of the Department teach undergraduate and graduate level courses related to the subjects covered by the Department. At the undergraduate level, courses related to General Ecclesiastical History, History and Literature of the Church of Greece and the Slavic Churches, Patristic Thought and Hagiology, Greek and Latin Christian Literature, Byzantine Archaeology and Art are taught at the undergraduate level.

In the postgraduate curriculum, courses in Church History, Hagiology, Patristic and Christian Literature and Thought, as well as Christian Art and Archaeology are taught.

Research focus:
The research interests of the Faculty members of the Department include the study of the History and Literature of the Church, from its origins to modern times, both of Greece and the Slavic Orthodox Churches and of other Christian Churches and denominations. Also, the study and interpretation of the Patristic and wider Christian literature of Greek and Latin-speaking Christendom. Finally, Byzantine Archaeology and Art.

C. Department of Dogmatic Theology

 

The Department covers the subjects of the History of Philosophy, Dogmatics and the Ecumenical Movement.

Teaching subject:
Faculty members of the Division teach undergraduate and graduate level courses related to the disciplines covered by the Division. In particular, at undergraduate level, the following courses are taught:

Dogmatics A (History of Orthodox Theology and Spirituality),
Dogmatics B (Introduction to Theological Gnosticism),
Dogmatics C (Exposition of the Orthodox Faith),
Dogmatics D (Symbolic Theology), History of Philosophy and the Ecumenical Movement.
At the graduate level, courses in Dogmatics, Ecumenical Theology and Philosophy are also taught.

Research focus:
The research interests of the members of the Department include the study of the History of Doctrine, the Doctrine of the Orthodox Church, Symbolic, History and Theology of the Ecumenical Movement and the History of Philosophy.

D. Department of Worship, Christian Education and Church Administration

 

The Department covers the following subjects: Oratory, Liturgy, Church Music, Catechetics, Pedagogy, Canon and Ecclesiastical Law, Introduction to Theology.

Teaching subject:
Faculty members in the Department teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and serve as advisors or committee members on graduate and doctoral dissertations.

Specifically at undergraduate level and as compulsory teaching:

Introduction to Theological Studies and Theological Thought, Introduction to Divine Worship, Exercises in Oratory – Communication and Liturgy, courses in Liturgy and Oratory from sources and contemporary studies, Introductory Pedagogy, Catechetics and Christian Pedagogy, as well as Canon and Ecclesiastical Law.

In addition, as elective courses, topics of Christian Education are taught, the Teaching of Religious Studies and the use of new technology in education, combined topics of Worship, Preaching and Art, the place of women in the Worship and Ministry of the Church, Christian Hymnology and the Law of the heterodox Churches, as well as of Mount Athos.

Research topic:
The faculty members of the Department are concerned with the synchronic and diachronic research and practical application of Liturgy and Homiletics, with Pedagogy and Catechesis in relation to the multicultural environment, with the teaching of Religious Education and the application of new technologies in its teaching, as well as with the relations between Church and State in the European environment.

Ε. Department of Ethics and Sociology

 

The Department covers the subjects of Ethics, the Sociology of Religion and especially Christianity, Pastoral Studies, the study of Modern Culture and the Informatics of theological data.

Teaching subject:
Faculty members of the Department teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels related to the disciplines covered by the Department.
In particular, at the undergraduate level, courses are taught in Ethics, General Sociology, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Christianity, Study of Contemporary Culture, Pastoral Studies, Social Ethics and Community Work, Bioethics, Computer Science with applications in Theology.
At the postgraduate level, courses are also taught in Ethics, Sociology of Religion and Culture, Study of Social Problems, Pastoral Studies, and Theological Data Informatics.

Research focus:
At the research level, members of the Department aim to:
The diachronic and synchronic study of religion from a sociological point of view with special emphasis on the study of Christianity and Orthodoxy.
The study of ethical issues and in particular Christian ethics, the investigation of the ethical and social dimension of bioethical and environmental problems and the study of pastoral and community work.
In the study of social problems and forms of contemporary religiosity, the relations between church and state, the social, political and cultural context of religious education, the relations between religion and society, and contemporary culture.
The digital processing and presentation of objects, data and relics that are relevant to theological and other research data of the School.
